LATCH method
Information may be infinite, however… the organization of information is finite as it can only be organized by LATCH: Location, Alphabet, Time, Category, or Hierarchy. I've tried a thousand times to find other ways to organize, but I always end up using one of these five.
— Richard Saul Wurman, Information Anxiety
LATCH (Location, Alphabet, Time, Category, and Hierarchy) is a 5-faceted approach by Richard Saul Wurman to categorizing notes so they are easy to find. Here's the Obsidian features that help with each facet:
- Location
- An example is a ride share app, they only show you options relevant to your pickup and drop-off locations, not the whole city.
- In Obsidian: links, metadata
- Alphabet
- What you label an object is key when thinking about alphabetical sorting. "Delicious Italian Lasagna" is hard to find in the D's.
- In Obsidian: folders, note titles
- Time
- Most social media organizes posts this way, newest first.
- In Obsidian: links, metadata
- Category
- Department stores are a good example, where items are put into categories like "Women" and "Home".
- In Obsidian: links, metadata, tags
- Hierarchy, ranking information in order by a trait like size or popularity.
- In Obsidian: metadata, links
